IN SUPPORT OF HUNDRED ACRE WOOD!

We will be at the Cascades Club in Chelsea handing out free tree saplings provided by the Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs (a mix of deciduous and evergreen: SEE THE LIST OF TREES BELOW WITH THEIR PREFERRED CONDITIONS).

We will be stationed in the parking lot and also below at the bike path that intersects with Campbell road to catch those on 2 wheels. First come, first served. We will try to limit quantities so everyone has a chance, but if you have a specific planting project let us know ahead of time. For instance, we are setting aside a some trees for the Cascade Club’s planting project on the same day.

The trees are free, but if you wish to make a contribution for a good cause, you can speak to an ACRE volunteer or contribute directly to https://www.acrechelsea.qc.ca/ in support of the Hundred Acre Wood project.

I'll be available for tree chat: anything from a problem tree you've been wondering about, to simply marvelling over the world's longest living organisms. First come, first serve: I'll be giving out a few per person to make sure there's enough to go around.

Species available

Yellow Birch (Betula alleghaniensis) – Tolerant of shade and of bottomland soils. Slow growing; can live more than 100 years.
Prefers: moist, rich soil.
Intolerant of: drought

Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) – A large, fast growing tree, adaptable. Well known for flaky, dark bark when mature. Small fruit feed wildlife.
Prefers: Full sun, acidic, moist soil, but is adaptable to most conditions.
Intolerant of: Shade

Red Oak (Quercus rubra) – A large tree species, relatively fast growing, characteristic of acidic upland and Canadian Shield soils, but adaptable. Tolerant of urban conditions. Bright wine-red fall foliage.
Prefers: full sun
Intolerant of: deep shade

Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) – A large tree, shade tolerant. Beautiful autumn colours, but sensitive to urban conditions.
Prefers: moist, well-drained soil.
Intolerant of: pollution, drought, and salt spray.

White Spruce (Picea glauca) – A large evergreen tree, common on higher pH substrates, somewhat sensitive to urban conditions. Grows rapidly. A boreal species, it may have difficulties in the long term with hotter/drier summers; stress is shown by low branch die-off.
Prefers: a wide range of conditions.
Intolerant of: salt and drought.

Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) – A very large, fast growing evergreen tree, somewhat sensitive to urban conditions. Tolerant of many growing conditions.
Prefers: full sun and acidic soils, but will tolerate alkaline soils.
Intolerant of: salt and pollution

Red Pine (Pinus resinosa) – A large evergreen tree, somewhat sensitive to urban conditions.
Prefers: full sun and sandy, acidic soil, but will tolerate alkaline soils.
Intolerant of: salt and pollution.
